Root To Rise

How far away do you feel from yourself? From whom you used to be or who you want to be? Have you gotten so far away that at times you do not recognize yourself?
In 2018, I had the opportunity to take a yoga teacher training program and was often struck by the seamless translation between the tenants of yoga and the therapeutic process. Root to Rise is the foundational cue in the practice of yoga. It is an invitation to the student to root into the foundation of the pose through her feet or hands before rising into its full expression. The intention is to offer a pause to balance, steady, and access the strength within yourself. This process of rooting before movement is biologically hardwired in all animals and humans.
A bird hunkers down before he takes flight; a cat crouches and stills herself before she pounces; and a baseball player plants his feet and is motionless the moment before he swings the bat.
Personal growth and recovery are no different. There are many things that can stand in the way of being able to root into yourself and your inherent strength and power, such as trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, alcohol and/or drugs, shame, etc. The process of therapy is one of coming back to yourself as a path to growth. You will be able to root down into your strength, power, and stillness before rising into the full expression of your life. -- Mahala Motzny
